Lions, Vikings seek 2-0 starts
Sep 16, 2007 - 11:08 AM Minnesota (1-0) at Detroit (1-0) Sunday 4:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- If the Detroit Lions are going to make it consecutive wins to start the season, they will have to find a way to beat the Minnesota Vikings when the NFC North rivals meet Sunday.
The Lions have lost 10 straight and 14 of the last 15 meetings between the teams.
A perennial laughingstock, the Lions showed resiliency in a season-opening 36-21 win at Oakland. Detroit squandered a 17-point lead before erupting for 16 points in the final 4:16 of the contest.
Jon Kitna led the way against the Raiders, completing 27-of-36 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. He spread the wealth around, throwing scoring strikes to Roy Williams, rookie Calvin Johnson and Shaun McDonald.
Detroit is seeking its first 2-0 start since 2004. However, the Lions stumbled to a 6-10 record that season.
The high-powered offense of the Lions should receive a stern test from the Vikings, who were dominant defensively in a season-opening 24-3 win over Atlanta.
Tackle Kevin Williams returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown and cornerback Antoine Winfield brought back a pick 14 yards for a score to lead the defensive effort. Minnesota allowed 256 total yards.
It also was an impressive debut for rookie Adrian Peterson, who rushed for 103 yards on 19 carries. He also turned a screen pass into a 60-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Peterson could see an increased role in this contest after Chester Taylor left the opener with a hip injury.
The Vikings are looking to start 2-0 for the second straight season.
