Undefeated Cowboys, Redskins renew rivalry

Sep 23, 2008 - 6:52 PM Washington (2-1) at Dallas (3-0), 4:05 pm. EDT

IRVING, Texas (Ticker) -- Through three weeks, there are only two unbeaten teams remaining in the NFC and both reside in the East - the Dallas Cowboys and defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

The Cowboys look to get a leg up on the idle Giants on Sunday when they host the Washington Redskins in a renewal of one of the NFC's premier rivalries.

Through three weeks, the NFC East has a combined 8-2 record - by far the best mark of any of the NFL's eight divisions - and the two losses came in head-to-head division matchups.

The Giants posted a season-opening 16-7 victory over the Redskins and the Cowboys held off the Philadelphia Eagles, 41-37, in a Week Two Monday night battle. Outside the division, the NFC East is 8-0.

Off to its second straight 3-0 start, Dallas returns home after winning at Lambeau Field for the first time in franchise history with last week's 27-16 victory over the Green Bay Packers. Wisconsin native Tony Romo, who completed 17-of-30 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown, won his first start in his home state.

The Packers shut down Terrell Owens, holding him to two catches for 17 yards. However, Marion Barber responded by rushing for a career-high 142 yards and a touchdown.

The Cowboys also are getting production from rookie Felix Jones, who is the first player to score in his first three games since Andre Davis and Donte' Stallworth in 2002. Jones ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run against the Packers.

The seeds for the Cowboys' playoff failure against the Giants last season may have been planted in their dismal Week 17 performance against the Redskins.

Having already clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, the Cowboys managed only two field goals in a 27-6 at Washington. The loss denied Dallas a franchise-record 14th win in the regular season.

The Redskins were seen as the fourth-best team in the NFL's toughest division and played like it against the Giants in Jim Zorn's coaching debut.

But while Washington (2-1) has not received as much attention as the other teams in the division, it has rebounded with wins over New Orleans (29-24) and Arizona (24-17).

In each of the two victories, Jason Campbell and Santana Moss have hooked up for the winning score in the fourth quarter. Moss has a touchdown reception in six straight games, tying a long- standing Redskins record set by Bobby Mitchell in 1964.

Campbell joins Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers and Oakland's JaMarcus Russell as the only starting quarterbacks not to throw an interception this season.
