Ducks extinguish Flames in shootout
Dec 11, 2010 - 8:43 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Corey Perry scored the decisive goal in the shootout and Jonas Hiller finished with 37 saves, as Anaheim took a 3-2 victory over Calgary at Honda Center. Each team had a goal heading into the third round of the shootout. Perry then squeezed a wrister past Henrik Karlsson, and Hiller extended to make a diving glove save on Rene Bourque, securing the outcome.
"The good part is we won tonight," Hiller said. "The bad part is we had a two- goal lead and we gave it up again. It shouldn't have happened. In the end, we'll be happy with the two points. We have to do better in the third."
Lubomir Visnovsky and Dan Sexton scored in regulation for the Ducks, who have won two of their last three games -- all of which have gone to a shootout.
Karlsson stopped 23 shots for the Flames, who have dropped two in a row.
Visnovsky's first-period tally and Sexton's second-period score had the Ducks out to a 2-0 lead. But Calgary pulled even in the third period, getting on the board with a power-play goal.
Olli Jokinen got the puck in the right circle and unleashed a high blast that beat Hiller to the stick side at 6:58.
The Flames pulled even thanks to a little luck. David Moss's shot was redirected by Visnovsky in the slot, beating Hiller with 6:35 to play. Hiller faced 14 shots in the third period.
"We think that if we play this way we will win a lot more than we are going to lose," Jokinen said. "We just have to make sure we bring this for our next game."
Anaheim got a big chance when Flames forward Brendan Morrison was called for hooking 2:37 into overtime. However, Karlsson stood tall, making three saves in the five minutes to ensure the game went to a shootout.
Ryan Getzlaf began the shootout with a goal, as he got Karlsson to close up before sliding the puck underneath the netminder. Alex Tanguay countered with a score for the Flames. Hiller committed early and laid out, and Tanguay shifted to the left before guiding the puck past the goaltender's leg.
Karlsson made a pad save on Joffrey Lupul before Niklas Hagman hit the crossbar.
