Franzen nets five, Red Wings outscore Senators
Feb 3, 2011 - 4:41 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Johan Franzen's five-goal game helped the Detroit Red Wings out-slug the Ottawa Senators, 7-5, at Scotiabank Place.Franzen's first career regular-season hat trick plus two, along with a goal each from Niklas Kronwall and Kris Draper helped the Red Wings win for a third time in their past four games.
"It seemed like everyone was setting me up the whole game," said Franzen. "What can I say, it was just one of those nights where everything went my way. Good way to come back from the break."
It was the first five-goal effort from a Red Wings player since Sergei Fedorov tallied all five during a 5-4 overtime win against Washington on December 26, 1996. Also, it was the first five-goal game in the NHL since December 20, 2007 when Marian Gaborik scored five in a game for Minnesota.
Jimmy Howard stopped 29 shots as Detroit defeated Ottawa for a third straight game.
Peter Regin, Chris Campoli and Alex Kovalev each recorded a goal and two assists for the Senators, who have dropped their past eight games. Milan Michalek scored twice in the loss.
"The problem hasn't been the defense lately," said Regin. "Our problem was socring so it's frustrating that we finally get some goals and we don't get a win out of it."
Robin Lehner allowed four goals on 19 shots before being pulled halfway through the second period as Ottawa finds itself mired in its longest losing streak since an 11-game slide during the 1995-96 season.
Brian Elliott suffered the loss, after giving up two goals on 18 shots the rest of the way.
With the score tied in the third, Franzen scored his third of the game just 30 seconds in on the power play as his wrist shot on the fly from the left circle found the back of the net, but Michalek scored on a redirect off a Kovalev shot just 29 seconds later.
Franzen, though, put his team in front for good at the 7:10 mark on a 5-on-3 as Brian Rafalski blasted a shot from the left circle that went wide, but it hit off the backboards and went to the right where Franzen slammed it home.
Franzen's fifth goal of the game came with the net empty and 34 seconds left to seal the win.
Kovalev's power-play goal just 1:15 in got the scoring started while Franzen notched his first goal of the game at the 6:52 mark when he jammed home a rebound.
Just 48 seconds after the goal, Henrik Zetterberg slid a backhand pass from the right circle to the front where Franzen was for a wrister past Lehner.
However, Ottawa tied the game 60 seconds later as Regin redirected a Kovalev pass as the low right side for his second goal of the year.
It was 3-2 at the 11:12 mark of the first when Campoli blasted a one-timer from the left circle.
Just past the midway point of the second, Detroit tied the game when Draper flung home a second rebound and the Wings took a 4-3 lead 13 seconds after when a one-timer by Kronwall at the right point hit off of two players and went in.
However, the Sens again tied the game just 29 seconds after Kronwall's goal when Michalek skated down the right wing, cut to the front and on his second shot from a sharp angle at the left side he got it home.
