Halak, Berglund lift Blues over Canucks
Feb 15, 2011 - 7:03 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jaroslav Halak stopped 23 shots and Patrik Berglund scored the winner late in the second period as St. Louis clipped Vancouver, 3-2, at Scottrade Center.Andy McDonald and Alex Steen also tallied for the Blues, who have won three of six overall.
"[Halak] had a great game for us," McDonald said. "Everything went well for us tonight, and we're going to need more of that if we're going to get in the playoffs."
Henrik Sedin and Jannik Hansen scored for the Canucks, the NHL leaders who have lost two of three. Roberto Luongo allowed three goals on 34 shots to lose in regulation for the first time since December 5.
St. Louis gained a two-goal edge on the power play as Berglund converted a cross-ice pass from Alex Pietrangelo with 2 1/2 minutes to play in the second period.
Hansen's score at 1:47 of the third period brought the Canucks within a goal, as he was alone at the right post to tip home a Raffi Torres redirection.
Luongo was summoned to the bench for an extra skater with 1:26 remaining, and Vancouver had a potential tying goal disallowed.
Alex Burrows managed to keep hacking and whacking in the crease and a loose puck eventually slid into the net with 40.8 seconds to play, but it was waved off immediately because a replay determined that Halak was illegally pushed in with the disc.
Steen missed the empty net a short time later but it didn't end up costing the home team.
McDonald gave the Blues a 1-0 lead 5:10 into the contest with a power-play marker, and Sedin tied the game after the midway point of the first.
Steen put the home team back in front just over two minutes later, when Luongo misplayed a clear at the side of his net and the young Swede hit the open net with a backhander.
"I thought I had enough time to shovel it over there. Obviously it was a bad decision," recalled Luongo.
