Pens win in OT to extend Avs' woes

Feb 17, 2011 - 4:56 AM Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Tyler Kennedy scored with 50 seconds left in overtime to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 win and send Colorado to its ninth straight loss.

In the extra session, Kevin Porter was called for tripping and the Penguins went on the power play. Kennedy sent a pass from the low left circle to the top of the circle where Alex Goligoski blasted a one-timer on net. The shot was stopped, but the rebound went right back to Kennedy, who slammed it home for the win.

"Whenever you get a power play in the overtime it's a bonus," said Kennedy. "It's nice to get this win tonight in a tough building."

Joe Vitale scored his first NHL goal and Jordan Staal added a goal for the Pens, who had dropped four of five coming in. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 shots in the win.

Cameron Gaunce also had his first NHL goal while Chris Stewart tallied the other for the Avs, who haven't lost nine straight since a franchise-record 14-game slide from Oct. 21-Nov. 19, 1990 when the club was in Quebec.

Peter Budaj made 33 stops as Colorado got a point for the first time during the slide as the previous eight losses were all in regulation.

Vitale's goal came at the 17:27 mark of the first when he lasered a shot from the slot into the left corner of the net.

Stewart tied the game 3:24 into the second when Stewart, in front of the net, swept in a pass from David Jones for his 13th goal of the year.

Gaunce's first NHL goal came with 5:41 left in the second when his simple shot from the right point hit off a Penguin and went in.

"I tried a one-timer before that and missed," said Gaunce. "I just wanted to get it though. There was a good screen in the crease and it went in."

Pittsburgh, though, again knotted the game just 32 seconds later as a wrist shot from Staal on the fly at the right circle found the back of the net.
