Couture, Niemi carry Sharks to shutout of Canadiens
Oct 27, 2013 - 2:34 AM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Couture lit the lamp twice and Antti Niemi turned away all 22 shots he faced, as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 2-0, at Bell Centre. After losing their last game 2-1 to Boston with 0.8 seconds remaining, the Sharks were hungry for a win. Niemi earned his second shutout of the season, the second in his last three games.
Patrick Marleau assisted on both goals, while Joe Thornton and Tyler Kennedy both had a helper as San Jose posted its third win in four and second during the first three tilts of a five-game road trip.
Carey Price made 33 saves for the Canadiens, who have lost three of their last four after winning four straight.
Couture was the first San Jose player to record a two-goal game in Montreal. since Owen Nolan did so in 1999.
He opened up the scoring with a power-play goal at the 6:20 mark of the second period. Marleau dished a pass across the ice to Thornton, who fired a shot towards Price. Couture was there to deflect the puck home for his fifth of the season.
The second goal came from a strange bounce off the glass. The carom fooled Price and landed on the stick of Couture, who quickly threw it into an open net with 4:09 played in the third.
"The second goal was a lucky bounce off the boards for the insurance marker," said Couture.
The Sharks finished the game strong by generating offense and keeping the puck away from the Canadiens, not allowing the hosts to pull Price in favor of an extra attacker.
"They are a fast team. They played really well and managed the puck well. They don't give you a lot and play well defensively, but we were right there. We had our chances in the second. Their goalie made some good saves at the right times," said Montreal coach Michel Therrien.
