Sharks try to bounce back in Montreal

Oct 26, 2013 - 2:58 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After coming less than a second away from remaining the lone team unbeaten in regulation this season, the San Jose Sharks will instead try to rebound from a rough loss on Saturday night when they visit the Montreal Canadiens.

The Sharks carried an 8-0-1 record into Thursday's road contest versus the Boston Bruins and the game appeared headed into overtime thanks to Patrick Marleau's game-tying goal for San Jose 18 seconds into the third period.

However, the Bruins' David Krejci found the back of the net with just 0.8 seconds to go in regulation, knocking the puck past Antti Niemi following a shot by Adam McQuaid.

Niemi ended with 15 saves as the Sharks outshot the Bruins 39-17, but were denied a third straight win.

"Yeah, we did play well again tonight, it's just a little mistake at the end," said San Jose forward Joe Thornton. "But we're playing good hockey and it's a pretty good hockey team that we played against."

The Sharks have now split the first two of a five-game road trip, while the Canadiens look to conclude a five-game homestand with a winning record. They are 2-2-0 on the residency, snapping a two-game slide with Thursday's 4-1 win over Anaheim.

Tomas Plekanec had a goal and two assists, giving him four tallies and seven points over his last four games, while Carey Price made 31 saves. Michael Bournival and Brian Gionta each notched a goal and an assist, while Rene Bourque also lit the lamp.

"We picked up two points tonight against a team that was supposed to beat us. It is a big win for us after that loss to the Oilers (4-3 on Tuesday). We have to keep it up," said Plekanec.

Montreal has won five of its past six overall, but has lost six of its last nine versus the Sharks. That includes a 4-3 shootout setback in San Jose when the clubs last met on Dec. 1, 2011.

The Habs have won three straight at home over Sharks, having not lost at home in this series since Dec. 17, 2002.

Price is 1-2-1 with a 3.22 goals against average in four meetings with the Sharks, while Niemi has split two career starts versus the Canadiens with a 2.92 GAA.
