Jokinen helps Flames singe Flyers
Mar 6, 2009 - 4:16 AM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- One day after joining his new team, Olli Jokinen paid immediate dividends.Acquired just before the NHL's trade deadline, Jokinen netted a pair of goals as the Calgary Flames scored four times in the first period en route to a 5-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
Mike Cammalleri added a power-play goal and two assists and Craig Conroy and Jordan Leopold also scored for Calgary, which improved to 9-1-2 in its last 12 games.
Captain Jarome Iginla and Curtis Glencross notched two assists apiece and Miikka Kiprusoff finished with 35 saves for the Flames.
"We were excited with the first game after the trade," Iginla said. "The new guys brought a lot of energy and we were pretty pumped up to get going again.
"We got some breaks. We got a power-play goal early. It was a good first period. That is the way you want to have a first period especially on the road and that was a good one."
Calgary coach Mike Keenan was pleased with the new additions.
"Good players learn off each other and their instincts for the game surface when they are playing together - and that was evident tonight," Keenan said.
Mike Knuble scored and Antero Niittymaki turned aside 15 shots and Martin Biron made 21 saves in relief for Philadelphia, which fell to 8-4-1 in its last 13 contests.
"That was a good old fashion butt-whipping," Flyers coach John Stevens said. "It was an awful effort from our hockey team. The only bright spot I saw was Marty (Biron). He came in and played great."
"As a team, we knew it wasn't good enough," captain Mike Richards said. "It wasn't even near close to being good enough. We turned the puck over a lot. We didn't stick to our system and we didn't hit to many bodies either. When you have something like that go on, it's not going to be pretty."
In addition to the setback, the Flyers lost center Daniel Briere to a groin injury. Briere, who has missed 51 games to injuries this season, returned to the lineup Sunday after sitting out 36 contests with a groin injury.
"All that we know is that he tweaked his groin," Philadelphia general manager Paul Holmgren said. "We are going to see how it is tomorrow. He is having a tough time with it right now, both mentally and physically.
"I feel bad for him because he has had this issue for most of the season. To have it come at this point of our season is not good news."
After Cammalleri opened the scoring 5:20 into the contest, Jokinen scored twice nearly six minutes apart to give the Flames a commanding 3-0 lead. The Finn has 23 goals on the season.
"Playing with great players, I was trying to keep it simple, try to fit right in and try to feel what your linemates are doing," Jokinen said.
"The first goal, the pass that Iginla made was amazing and I had an easy job putting the puck into the net. The second goal with Mike (Cammalleri), he made a good pass as well. It was fun playing with those two guys."
In exchange for the talented 11-year-veteran on Wednesday, the Flames traded center Matthew Lombardi, right wing Brandon Prust and a first-round draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes.
Leopold gave Calgary a four-goal lead with 72 seconds remaining in the session.
"It's nice to be back," Leopold said of his return. "It is the same core of guys around here and I fit right in. I am happy to wear the sweater again."
Although Knuble quartered the deficit 4:42 into the third period, Conroy restored the four-goal bulge.
