Crosby, Penguins beat Flames 3-1
Jan 14, 2010 - 6:41 AM CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- Sidney Crosby and Marc-Andre Fleury put on quite a show - at the Calgary Flames' expense.Crosby scored his 30th goal of the season early in the first period, and Fleury made 37 saves in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 3-1 victory over Calgary on Wednesday night.
"Fleury stole that for us," Crosby said. "Fleury made some big saves, one really late a great chance on a one timer, and through the whole game made some great saves. We owe that one to him for sure."
Bill Guerin scored the deciding goal on a power play midway through the second period - 1:13 after Mark Giordano tied it for the Flames.
Tyler Kennedy completed the scoring with 1:40 left in the third.
Making just his second appearance at the Saddledome in his five-year career with Pittsburgh, Crosby scored at 3:52 of the first period.
Bursting down the right wing, Crosby split the defense duo of Jay Bouwmeester and Mark Giordano, and beat Miikka Kiprusoff.
"It's what I do every night," Crosby said. "Maybe a little higher expectations in front of a full house, especially only once every two or three years."
Crosby has scored in four straight games, piling up six goals during that span. He's second in the NHL in goals, one behind San Jose's Patrick Marleau.
"You don't get sick of them, I know that," coach Dan Bylsma said. "It's good execution, it's going north hard, it's getting to the net and then it's power going to the net. It was pretty nice to see, we've seen it a couple times on this trip and I'd be happy to see it again."
Fleury was especially sharp in the third period when Calgary outshot Pittsburgh 16-5. Less than a minute in, Fleury turned aside Nigel Dawes on a breakaway. On the next shift, the Flames' top line of Jarome Iginla, Olli Jokinen and Jamie Lundmark buzzed around the Pittsburgh net, taking multiple whacks at the puck but couldn't score.
"It was fun," Fleury said. "It t was pretty intense traffic both ways. Our defense was blocking a lot of shots, they were diving to make saves in front of me. It's a big two points for us."
The Flames have scored more than three goals just once in the past 21 games.
"Their goalie did play well, but we had 18 or 19 quality scoring chances here tonight and were only able to capitalize on one of them," coach Brent Sutter said. "We're doing the right things to create the opportunities, but we're not getting the job done when it's there for us."
NOTES: Flames star Iginla has gone five games without a point. ... A woman in a wedding dress had a "Marry Me Sidney" sign.
