Final
NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Atlanta
Nov 5, 2010 - 2:35 AM Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mathieu Garon stopped all 25 shots he faced and earned his 18th career shutout to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-0 win over the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.Jakub Voracek and Derick Brassard scored for Columbus, which has won two straight and five of its last six games overall. R.J. Umberger added an empty- net goal in the victory.
"For me and for the team, it was a matter of all of us working hard," said Garon. "Guys are taking good care of the defensive zone and blocking tons of shots, and that makes it easier for me."
Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves for the Thrashers, who failed to record at least one point for the first time in six games (3-1-2). Atlanta, which will play nine of its last 11 games on home ice, fell to 2-3-0 at home this season.
"We are not winning enough battles -- it is up to each player to start the process (of winning puck battles)," said Atlanta head coach Craig Ramsay. "We need everybody involved to score goals. We've had some slumps when we're just not getting enough shots on net."
Following a scoreless opening period, the Blue Jackets grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 4:46 mark of the second stanza on Brassard's fifth goal of the season.
Voracek held control along the goal line to the right side and fired a backhand pass through the crease directly onto the stick of Brassard, who settled the disc on his stick and easily put it home from near the left post. Pavelec was not able to slide across in time to attempt a save.
Midway through the final stanza, the visitors gained a two-goal edge. A pass from the right circle by Brassard made its way back to the near point. Marc Methot gained control, drifted a few steps toward the slot and fired a slap shot which was deflected past Pavelec by Voracek from atop the crease.
Garon faced only eight shots in the final 20 minutes, none of which were particularly high-percentage scoring chances. Andrew Ladd was alone in the left slot with under three minutes remaining in regulation, but Garon was quicker with his pad on Ladd's wrister attempt.
Pavelec was pulled in favor of the extra attacker with 1:58 to play, but Garon stood tall and Umberger scored an empty-netter inside the final minute to seal the victory.
