Coyotes begin road trip in Calgary

Nov 17, 2010 - 4:24 PM (Sports Network) - Coyotes forwards Vernon Fiddler and Ray Whitney have busted out of their season-long scoring droughts in big ways.

With the duo teaming up for back-to-back hat tricks, Phoenix aims for a fourth straight victory this evening in a rematch with the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome.

Fiddler went his first 15 games without a goal this year before breaking out with a three-goal effort in a 5-4 victory over the Flames last Friday. The victory was Phoenix's third in four games in this series and the two clubs have split their last six at Calgary.

Phoenix hosted St. Louis the following night and Ray Whitney, who did not have a goal in his first 14 games this year, notched his fourth career hat trick and added two assists to match his career best of five points first set on Feb. 8, 2007.

One of Whitney's previous three-goal games came against the Flames on March 6, 2009 while with the Hurricanes.

Radim Vrbata added a goal and two assists for the Coyotes, who finished with three power-play goals and are 3-0-2 in their last five games. They hadn't won back-to-back games this year prior to this three-game win streak.

Ilya Bryzgalov was solid for the win, making 35 saves.

"We're a team right now that is finding ways to win," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "Our power play came through for us tonight with a big game. Points at home are always a good thing."

Phoenix now begins a three-game road trip through Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, and is 3-3-2 on the road this season.

Following their defeat in Phoenix, Calgary dropped a second game in a row on Saturday with a 4-3 loss in San Jose. Mark Giordano and Jarome Iginla each had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who have lost six of seven overall.

Jay Bouwmeester also scored for Calgary, which got 31 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff and went 1-3-0 on a four-game road trip.

Iginla's goal was just his third of the season and first in eight games, and the captain knows he needs to step up for the Flames.

"I haven't strung enough consistent games together," he told Calgary's website on Monday. "Last game was better but I need to start having those types of games night in, night out to help the club."

Though he has 30 goals in 52 career games versus the Phoenix franchise, Iginla hasn't scored against the club in eight straight games.
