Recchi leads late Boston surge vs. Florida
Nov 25, 2010 - 5:05 AM Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Mark Recchi notched a pair of third-period goals to lead Boston past Florida, 3-1, at BankAtlantic Center.Recchi's second goal of the contest gave him 1,500 career points, and made him the 13th player in NHL history to reach the plateau.
"It's pretty nice when it comes in a big win like that," Recchi said about his milestone marker. "They were important goals, and that's what makes it so rewarding, that we won. There have been a lot of teammates over the years that have been a part of this."
Brad Marchand also scored and David Krejci picked up two assists for the Bruins, who put the brakes on a two-game skid.
Tim Thomas was solid once again, stopping 31-of-32 shots and improving to 11-1-1 on the season.
"We're gonna have a much better Thanksgiving than the Panthers, probably," quipped Thomas. "They battled hard again, but we've developed a habit of coming on in the third period. We have to stop that, and start playing every game like it's the third."
Steven Reinprecht posted the only offense for the Panthers, who have lost three of four. Tomas Vokoun yielded three goals on 37 shots in the loss, his second in a row.
The Bruins struck twice early in the third to take the lead, as Marchand tied the game at the eight-second mark and Recchi followed at 2:54.
Boston's tying score came with forward Milan Lucic in the box for hooking, a carry-over penalty.
The go-ahead score happened when Krejci outdueled a Panthers checker behind Vokoun, flipped the puck in the slot for Recchi's quick shot.
Recchi extended the Bruins' edge to 3-1 on a 5-on-3 power play with four minutes remaining, giving him the milestone.
Reinprecht opened the scoring at the 2:14 mark of the second period, when he was alone at the left side of the crease to deposit a Michal Repik drive.
"Sometimes it's pretty boring and painful to play in games like this, when you don't get many chances to score," said Panthers forward Chris Higgins. "We need to somehow keep generating scoring chances."
