Flames try for road win against red-hot Pens

Nov 27, 2010 - 4:18 PM (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames were able to record a victory in Philadelphia yesterday and will try to duplicate that result when they travel to the other side of Pennsylvania to battle the surging Pittsburgh Penguins today at CONSOL Energy Center.

The Flames picked up just their third victory in 13 games, improving to 3-8-2 over that stretch with Friday's shootout win over the Flyers. Calgary also managed to earn a point for the fourth time in five games (2-1-2). Today also marks the end of five-game road trip for the Flames, who are 4-6-2 as the visiting team this year.

Calgary, however, has not had much success in Pittsburgh over the years. Although this will be the Flames' first-ever game at the newly-minted CONSOL Energy Center, Calgary has just one win in its last 14 games (1-11 with two ties) in the Steel City.

Pittsburgh notched a 3-1 victory in Calgary last year and has won three straight and six of the last nine games in the series.

The Penguins also enter today's game on a tremendous hot streak, having won five straight tilts and posting a 7-0-1 record since their last regulation loss on Nov. 10.

The five-game winning streak is the longest for Dan Bylsma's club since Dec. 10-19 of last year. Pittsburgh hasn't claimed six straight victories since a seven-game winning streak from Oct. 8-23 of the 2009-10 season.

Pittsburgh was also in action on Friday afternoon and edged the visiting Ottawa Senators, 2-1. Alex Goligoski scored the game-winner early in the third period to help the Penguins earn the close regulation victory.

Evgeni Malkin had the other goal while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 43 shots for the Penguins. Tyler Kennedy added two assists in the win.

"They came hard at us all night," said Fleury. "They were throwing pucks at us from all angles and we just had to get through it. We worked hard to come back and it paid off for us."

Sidney Crosby had an assist to extend his point streak to 11 games. He has nine goals and 13 helpers during the run. With 37 points, Crosby is just one behind Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the NHL's scoring lead.

The Penguins have won three straight on home ice and are sporting a 6-5-1 record at their new arena.

The Flames earned their 3-2 victory in Philadelphia thanks to the game-winning shootout tally by Rene Bourque. After Mike Richards was unable to score on the backhand to start the third round, Bourque beat Sergei Bobrovsky with a snapshot inside the left post to end the contest.

Curtis Glencross and Steve Staios scored in regulation for the Flames, while Miikka Kiprusoff made 34 stops for the win.

"They're really one of the top teams in the league and it was a big challenge for us," Kiprusoff said of the Flyers. "We talked about it before the game and we've been working pretty hard, but the last two games, we weren't able to get wins there. We have to keep pushing and play as a team and we woke up."

Calgary played its second straight game without Matt Stajan and the centerman is questionable for today's test with an upper-body injury.
