Wilson lifts Columbus over Dallas in SO

Dec 7, 2010 - 6:36 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Kyle Wilson scored the deciding goal in the shootout, as the Columbus Blue Jackets snapped the Dallas Stars' six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory at Nationwide Arena.

After a scoreless overtime, Rick Nash started the shootout by beating Kari Lehtonen to the stick side. The next two shooters were stopped before Brad Richards evened it for the Stars.

Wilson, like Nash, went low stick side to beat Lehtonen and Mathieu Garon made a right pad save on Jamie Benn to give Columbus the win.

Nash registered a goal and an assist in regulation for the Blue Jackets, who suffered a 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday and were able to snap a five- game slide. Kris Russell also tallied for Columbus, while Garon turned aside 16-of-18 shots.

Richards and Steve Ott scored in regulation time for Dallas, which is still 8-1-2 over its last 11 games. Lehtonen finished with 27 saves.

"We played a strong game and then it came down to the last [minute]," Stars winger James Neal said. "It's tough."

Tied at 1-1 after two periods, the Blue Jackets were unable to take advantage of a power-play chance early in the third and Dallas went in front at 7:52. Trevor Daley, pinching in from his defensive position, sent a pass to Ott from below the goal line and the big centerman put it home from the low left circle for a 2-1 lead.

Karlis Skrastins' holding minor with 1:50 left in regulation gave Columbus a golden opportunity to even things and Nash made the Stars pay when he sent a wrist shot past Lehtonen from the right circle with 46.1 seconds remaining for a 2-2 game.

"It's huge. It's exactly what we needed as a team, coming back like that late in the game," Garon said. "Our power play got us a big goal and our captain [Nash] stepped up in the end."

Russell finished off a give-and-go with Jakub Voracek 5:26 into the contest to give the Blue Jackets the early lead. Russell took the feed and sent a backhander past Lehtonen high to the blocker side from the low right circle for his second goal of the season.

Dallas had a pair of power-play chances, while Columbus had one, but neither side was able to capitalize and it remained 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The Stars were denied another opportunity with the man advantage early in the second, but struck for the equalizer with 4:15 left in the stanza. Richards accepted a pass from Neal off a line rush, then fired a quick wrister from the slot that deflected off Garon's glove and in. It stayed a 1-1 contest after two periods.

Game Notes

The Blue Jackets took three of four from the Stars last year and have been able to rack up points in this series over the last few seasons, going 10-4-4 in the last 18 meetings...Dallas finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while Columbus went 1-for-3.
