Streaking Canucks welcome Oilers to Rogers Arena

Dec 26, 2010 - 3:37 PM (Sports Network) - The red-hot Vancouver Canucks will try to extend an eight- game point streak this evening when they play host to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks, who lead the Northwest Division by three points over the Avalanche, are 6-0-2 since their last regulation loss on Dec. 5 and are coming off a 7-2 rout in Columbus on Thursday. Vancouver got 10 points from its top line in that victory as well as 24 saves from backup goaltender Cory Schneider.

Henrik Sedin matched a career-high with four points off a goal and three assists and fellow first-liners Alexandre Burrows and Daniel Sedin finished with a goal and two assists each. Raffi Torres scored twice in the victory.

"I thought for our line we had a few good shifts right off the get go and we felt good about our game," Burrows told Vancouver's website. "And next thing you know we had a couple points, so it's good to see."

Ryan Kesler, who also scored, has seven goals and 13 points in his last eight games, while both Sedin brothers have six goals and 19 points over their last 13 contests. Daniel has five goals and seven assists over a six-game point streak against the Oilers, while Henrik has a seven-game run versus them that features three goals and nine helpers.

That trio figures to give the Oilers all they can handle this evening as they close out a three-game road trip. Edmonton lost the opener of the swing in San Jose on Tuesday prior to a 3-2 shootout setback on Thursday in Los Angeles. It marked the sixth straight game in LA between the Oilers and Kings that has gone into a shootout and Edmonton had won the previous five.

Taylor Hall and Jean-Francois Jacques scored for the Oilers, who have dropped four of five overall. Devan Dubnyk turned aside 27-of-29 shots through overtime and yielded a pair of scores over six rounds in the shootout.

"That was a good 60-minute game or 65-minute game by us," Dubnyk said. "I think if you look at the game there aren't really any complaints about us by the way we played or (our) effort. We worked hard on the power play, penalty kill, and 5-on-5.

"It hurts to lose. We need to win these games and get that extra point when we go into overtime but I think if we play like that more often then we're probably going to get that extra two (points)."

Nikolai Khabibulin is likely to get the start in net tonight for the Oilers, but he is just 1-9-1 in his last 11 versus the Canucks.

Canucks netminder Roberto Luongo is 6-1-0 over his last seven when facing Edmonton.

Vancouver has already picked up a pair of victories in Edmonton this season, giving the club a win in six of seven and seven of the last 10 meetings overall. The Canucks have won three straight and five of their last six at home versus the Oilers.
