LA scores four second-period goals to rout Anaheim
Dec 27, 2010 - 6:26 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Dustin Brown capped Los Angeles' four-goal outburst in the second period, and the Kings routed Anaheim 4-1 for their third straight win.Wayne Simmonds, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams also scored in the second period for the Kings, who began a busy stretch where they will play six games in nine days.
Jonathan Bernier had 18 saves for the win and needed to stop just three shots in the third period to help Los Angeles avenge a 2-0 defeat at Anaheim on November 29.
"I think it wasn't my greatest game for the rebound, I felt like I gave away a lot of rebounds. But guys were there for me in the right spot there, and I was just trying to make that first save," Bernier said.
The Ducks also scored in the second period, getting their only goal on a re- direction from Matt Beleskey.
Jonas Hiller allowed all four LA goals on 23 shots and was pulled for Curtis McElhinney, who made seven saves in 22 scoreless minutes.
"We made too many critical mistakes with the puck," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We didn't execute anywhere near our abilities and it seemed like we couldn't get anything going."
The Kings opened the five-goal second period with Simmonds' tally 15 seconds in. He scored into the wide-open left side of the net with traffic in front.
Anaheim evened the score just 32 seconds later on Beleskey's tip of Toni Lydman's shot, but wouldn't tally again.
Kopitar made it 2-1 on a rebound goal at 9:10 of the period and Williams scored after a turnover in the Anaheim zone, flipping the puck past Hiller's glove at the 12:55 mark.
Hiller was yanked after giving up Brown's power-play goal with 2:03 left in the period, although he had little chance to stop the shot with heavy traffic in front of the net.
