Rangers dominate Islanders at MSG
Dec 28, 2010 - 5:57 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Brian Boyle posted a goal and two assists as the New York Rangers ripped the New York Islanders, 7-2, at Madison Square Garden.Marian Gaborik, Brandon Dubinsky and Derek Stepan each chimed in with a goal and helper for the Rangers, who snapped a two-game slide and won for the fourth time in six games.
Matt Gilroy scored twice, Ruslan Fedotenko also tallied while Henrik Lundqvist brushed aside a shaky first period and won by halting 18-of-20 shots.
"We're just trying to play. We didn't start out well but we just wanted to leave it alone, go out and continue to play," said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. "(Just) grind through it and find ways to win hockey games. I think we are 7-3-1 in our last 11 games here, but we found a way."
Rob Schremp and P.A. Parenteau scored for the Islanders, who had won three in a row and picked up a point in their previous five.
Dwayne Roloson was blitzed for 52 shots and didn't play badly despite allowing all seven goals.
The Rangers went up 3-2 at 12:08 of the second period when Gilroy's chance from the blue line deflected off a stick and careened past Roloson.
"It is nice. I grew up about two miles from that rink," Gilroy said about his two-goal night against his hometown club. "I saw a lot of games there (at Nassau Coliseum). It is good to be a part of the rivalry now."
It was 4-2 for the home team on Boyle's successful backhand from a sharp angle with 1:39 left in the period.
Dubinsky found a loose puck at the right side of the crease after a failed Artem Anisimov pass, and beat Roloson at 4:14 of the third period for a 5-2 contest.
Fedotenko and Stepan then lit the lamp within a 1:29 span midway through the third to wrap up the rout.
The Blueshirts got started early, taking a 1-0 lead at 44 seconds when Gilroy was credited with a shot that ticked off Schremp's stick in front before sliding past Roloson.
Schremp equalized at 7:51 when he ripped home a high wrister from the left circle that dropped from Lundqvist's glove, and the Isles took a one-goal edge at 9:43 after Parenteau potted Moulson's rebound.
Gaborik knotted the game with 51 seconds left on a power play when he one- timed a Marc Staal pass from the right circle.
