Kiprusoff shines as Flames edge Oilers
Jan 2, 2011 - 8:50 AM Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 16 shots to help the Calgary Flames edge the Edmonton Oilers, 2-1, at Rexall Place.Mark Giordano and Tim Jackman each scored a goal for the Flames, who have won a season-high four straight games.
"We had a good, solid start to our game," said Calgary head coach Brent Sutter. "When you get all the shots we did and hold your opponents to three, you're doing something right. We carried that on for the rest of the game and were able to grab the two points."
Ryan Jones scored the lone goal while Nikolai Khabibulin turned aside 28-of-30 shots for the Oilers, who have dropped their past six games.
"I thought we did a good job of getting things set up," said Edmonton forward Taylor Hall. "But then the pass would be made and the puck would bounce and we'd have to do it again."
The losing streak matches a season high for Edmonton. The team also had six game skids in October and November.
Calgary took a 1-0 lead at the 12:47 mark of the first. David Moss sent the puck from the deep left boards to the front where Jackman switched to the backhand for a shot between the pads of Khabibulin.
Edmonton tied the game halfway through the second period. Dustin Penner held the puck along the left boards and dished it over to the left circle for Tom Gilbert, who sent a sharp pass over to the right side where Jones snapped it home.
Just four minutes later, Calgary took the lead back when Giordano's shot from the high slot made its way through traffic and into the back of the net.
Kiprusoff preserved the lead in the third period by making nine saves.
His best came with just under 12 minutes to play as Ales Hemsky let fly with a shot from the right circle that got past the goaltender, but Kiprusoff was able to fall backwards and sweep it away with his glove.
