Williams lifts Kings over Calgary in a SO
Feb 6, 2011 - 7:10 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Justin Williams scored in the seventh round of the shootout, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-3 victory over Calgary and halting the Flames' winning streak at six games.Williams had a goal and two assists in regulation and was the only player in the last five rounds of the shootout to score.
Rob Scuderi and Dustin Brown also scored in regulation for the Kings, who have won five of their last six games and improved to 2-0-1 on a 10-game road trip. Jonathan Quick had 32 saves for the victory.
Alex Tanguay scored twice for Calgary, including the game-tying goal midway through the third period. Robyn Regehr also scored and Miikka Kiprusoff had 30 saves for the Flames, who were trying to win seven games in a row for the first time since November 1-16, 2005.
Calgary rallied to tie the game three times and head coach Brent Sutter said he wasn't taking it as a loss.
"It was a hard-fought point and unfortunately LA got two," Sutter said.
The first four skaters in the shootout -- Rene Bourque and Tanguay for Calgary, Michal Handzus and Jarret Stoll for LA -- all scored with simple, well-placed shots.
The players stopped scoring once they got trickier with their moves. Quick was lucky twice on shots by the Flames' Olli Jokinen and Curtis Glencross.
He got a piece of Jokinen's try, which then hit the left post and Quick's back before falling harmlessly to the ice. Jokinen's shot hit the crossbar and Quick batted it away from the net as it fell.
On his game-winner, Williams stickhandled toward Kiprusoff and beat the netminder with a shot that split the gap between his blocker and right pad.
The Kings will finish their lengthy road trip with games against Pittsburgh, Washington, Philadelphia, Columbus, the New York Rangers, New York Islanders and Anaheim.
"We have to go home, get some practice time in and clean up a bunch of things before we get back on the road," said LA head coach Terry Murray.
The Kings continued to allow Calgary to come back.
Scuderi's shot from inside the blue line scooted through just 39 seconds into the game, but Regehr tied it with a wrister from the point just 42 seconds later. Brown stuffed home a loose puck on the power play at 6:17 for a 2-1 LA lead.
Tanguay scored 45 seconds into the second period on a one-timer from the left circle, but Williams gave the Kings another one-goal lead at 11:02 while cleaning up in front of the net.
The 3-2 lead stood until Tanguay's second goal of the game at 11:15 of the third. His shot from a sharp angle to Quick's left came on the power play.
"We just stayed with our game plan," Sutter said of Calgary's repeated comebacks. "It's a good feeling that the guys know that they can do it."
