Flames send Senators to 11th straight loss

Feb 10, 2011 - 6:18 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Anton Babchuk had a goal and two assists to help Calgary take a 5-2 decision over Ottawa, and extend the Senators' losing streak to 11 games.

Tim Jackman posted two goals, while Olli Jokinen and Curtis Glencross both had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who have won two straight and eight of nine. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots in the win.

The Flames were strong on the man advantage as the team finished the game 3- for-5 on the power play.

"We're a confident group and even when we were down the one goal, 2-1, you could just see it on the bench that we were fine," said Calgary head coach Brent Sutter. "We settled down and we really got into our game in the second period and we stayed with it for the rest of the game."

Ottawa tied the franchise's longest losing streak, matching the mark set from December 30, 1995-January 25, 1996. The Senators' only victory in their last 18 games came on January 13 against the Islanders.

Chris Campoli and Chris Kelly scored, while Robin Lehner stopped 30 shots in the loss.

Things got worse for Ottawa before the game even started, as the team learned that captain Daniel Alfredsson will be out indefinitely with a back injury. He did say that the injury will not require surgery.

Trailing by a goal, Calgary tied the game at the 13:42 mark of the second on the power play thanks to Jokinen's 10th goal of the season. Glencross held the puck at the right circle and waited for the goaltender to get out of position before sending it to the slot where Jokinen threw it into the open net.

Glencross then gave Calgary a 3-2 lead with 2:16 left in the second with his 15th goal of the season.

It was a 4-2 game 8:36 into the third as a bullet from Babchuk at the top of the right circle sailed past Lehner for a power-play goal.

Jackman sealed the win with 4:22 to play with another power-play goal to account for the final score.

The first goal of the game was Calgary's as Niklas Hagman's shot from the slot went off of Jackman and into the net.

Ottawa, though, scored two goals 1:04 apart later in the first to take a 2-1 lead.

The first goal came at the 9:17 mark as a hard pass from the right point by Jarkko Ruutu went to the slot where Kelly snapped a quick shot into the left corner.

Just over a minute later, Campoli blasted a slap shot that flipped over Kiprusoff and went into the net.
