New-look Blues light up scoreboard against Ducks
Feb 20, 2011 - 5:59 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Andy McDonald, T.J. Oshie and Chris Stewart each scored a pair of goals, as the new-look St. Louis Blues dominated the Anaheim Ducks, 9-3, at Scottrade Center.David Backes and Alexander Steen both had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who have won three in a row. Ty Conklin stopped 3-of-5 shots before being replaced by Ben Bishop, who made 20 saves.
Hours after earning a win Friday night in Buffalo, the Blues dealt former No. 1 overall pick Erik Johnson and center Jay McClement to the Colorado Avalanche in multi-player trade. In addition to the two players, the Blues sent a conditional 2011 or 2012 first-round draft choice to Colorado in exchange for Stewart and Kevin Shattenkirk, as well as a conditional 2011 or 2012 second- round draft choice. Shattenkirk assisted on Stewart's second goal.
"It's a perfect start," Stewart said. "That's my game. I like going hard at the net and creating space."
Teemu Selanne, Jarkko Ruutu and Ryan Getzlaf lit the lamp for the Ducks, who have dropped three straight since a four-game winning streak.
Anaheim acquired Ruutu from the Senators on Thursday in exchange for a sixth- round pick in the 2011 draft. Ruutu made his Ducks debut on Saturday.
Curtis McElhinney stopped 4-of-11 shots before being pulled for Timo Pielmeier, who stopped 5-of-12 shots.
"We're just not playing our caliber of hockey," Getzlaf said. "This is another game where we just weren't ready to play...It's frustrating."
Ruutu made an early impact with his new team, scoring on a tip-in just 2:20 into the game. Selanne's wrister from the right circle at the 6:41 mark gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead.
The Blues scored twice in a span of seven seconds to tie things up. McDonald deflected Oshie's shot into the back of the net at 10:24 before Oshie used a backhander to make it a 2-2 game.
Carlo Colaiacovo's power-play goal with 5:32 left gave St. Louis a 3-2 edge. But Getzlaf lit the lamp with 3:18 remaining to make it 3-3.
The Blues went ahead for good with 1:36 remaining in the first on McDonald's tip-in.
St. Louis added four more goals in the second to turn the game into a rout. Backes got the first, jamming home a rebound at the 7:50 mark to make it a 5-3 contest.
Oshie's snap shot at 12:54 was followed up by a pair of Stewart power-play goals, giving St. Louis an 8-3 cushion heading to the third.
Steen capped the scoring at the 7:21 mark of the final period with a short- handed marker.
