Bruins beat Flames behind Lucic's 2 goals
Feb 23, 2011 - 5:39 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Milan Lucic scored twice and Tim Thomas made 28 saves, leading the Boston Bruins to a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.Brad Marchand also scored for Boston, which has won three in a row following a three-game slide.
Curtis Glencross lit the lamp for Calgary, which had a three-game winning streak snapped. Miikka Kiprusoff let in two goals on 28 shots in the setback.
"We never capitalized on some opportunities and hit a couple posts," said Flames head coach Brent Sutter. "It was one of those nights it just didn't happen the way we would've liked it to."
The Bruins got on the scoreboard only 59 seconds into the game after catching Calgary out of position. Boston defenseman Adam McQuaid caught an airborne clearing attempt at center ice, and quickly got his team back on the attack as the Flames changed lines.
McQuaid passed to David Krejci along the right boards, the opposite side of the ice from the benches, and Krejci unloaded a shot that Kiprusoff stopped. But Lucic flew in to deposit the rebound, just before he collided with the Calgary goaltender.
The Bruins held the 1-0 edge until the third period, when a lucky bounce resulted in their second goal. A shot from the left circle bounced off Patrice Bergeron's skate and headed directly to Marchand in the right circle. Marchand lined up the shot and wristed it into the open net at 5:55.
"If there's one thing we talked about after the second period, I thought we over-passed it," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien. "We started putting more pucks at the net as the third period went on."
Glencross' power-play goal with 2:33 to play put Calgary on the board, but the Flames weren't able to net the equalizer after pulling Kiprusoff for the extra attacker. Lucic scored on the empty net in the final minute to secure the win.
