McBain ices Sabres with OT winner

Mar 4, 2011 - 5:02 AM Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Jamie McBain scored the winner 26 seconds into overtime as the Carolina Hurricanes took a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres at RBC Center.

In the extra session, McBain took a pass at the right point, took a stride down and blasted a shot past Ryan Miller for the win.

Jiri Tlusty and Chad LaRose each had a goal for the Hurricanes, who have taken their last two games. Cam Ward stopped 27 shots in the win, which put Carolina in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.

"It was a playoff-type game out there tonight," said Ward. "It was fast-paced and was to be expected between two clubs fighting for points. We just have to focus on what we need to do and win hockey games."

Steve Montador had a goal and an assist while Brad Boyes also scored for the Sabres, who had won three of four coming into the contest. Miller made 21 stops in the loss.

Aside from the overtime goal, all the scoring in this game occurred in the second period as the teams exchanged a pair of goals.

The first came 4:35 in when a blast by Montador in the high slot sailed past Ward, but Tlusty banged home a rebound in front just over two minutes later to tie the game.

Just past the midway mark of the frame, the Sabres again regained the lead when a shot from Montador at the left point was stopped in front and Boyes jammed home the rebound.

However, LaRose tied the game just under two minutes later when an errant clearing attempt by Miller was picked off and LaRose shot home the puck for his 12th goal of the year.

Buffalo plays at Philly on Saturday...Carolina hits the road for a game in Chicago on Friday...Each team has won once in the series this season...Neither team scored on the power play, as Carolina had two chances and Buffalo five.
