Burrows helps Canucks down Jackets
Oct 11, 2011 - 2:28 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Alexandre Burrows netted the go-ahead goal in the third period to lift the Vancouver Canucks past the Columbus Blue Jackets, 3-2."That was three games in four nights for us, we had nothing left in the tank," Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel said. "In the third period they (Vancouver) were a team that's played one game. You could really see that (in) our shifts, guys were coming off after 25-30 seconds."
Chris Higgins and Cody Hodgson tallied the other two goals for Vancouver, which won its first game after losing to Pittsburgh, 4-3, in a shootout in its season opener last Thursday.
Cory Schneider stopped 23-of-25 shots for the Canucks.
Cam Atkinson and Vinny Prospal scored the two goals for the Blue Jackets, who started the season 0-3-0 for the first time in franchise history.
Steve Mason saved 22-of-25 shots for Columbus.
After Matt Calvert stripped Higgins of the puck in Vancouver's zone, Derek MacKenzie corralled the puck on the edge of the right circle. He made a beautiful back-handed feed to Atkinson who wristed it home at the 8:42 mark of the first period.
The Canucks tied the game 15:30 into the opening period as Higgins deflected a Manny Malhotra wrister from just inside the blue line past Mason.
Prospal made it a 2-1 game late into the second period as he snuck a wrap-around past Schneider inside the right post.
A penalty shot was called in the opening seconds of the final period when Vancouver's Christopher Tanev covered the puck with his hand in the crease as he knocked the goal cage loose. But Maksim Mayorov was unable to capitalize as Schneider made a glove save on his penalty shot opportunity.
Hodgson re-directed Dan Hamhuis' left-wing pass past Mason's stick to tie the score in the opening stages of the third period.
Burrows gave Vancouver its first lead of the contest 8:29 into the third as he jammed a loose puck through the five-hole in front of Mason.
Game Notes
Atkinson's goal was the first of his career...Rick Nash recorded an assist in the game to move him nine points shy of 500 for his career...Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault is 10 wins shy of Marc Crawford's franchise record 246 wins.
