Devils clash with visiting Hurricanes
Nov 8, 2011 - 3:43 PM (Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils shoot for their third straight victory when they entertain the Carolina Hurricanes tonight at Prudential Center.New Jersey has won back-to-back games since losing three straight and five of six games, and is coming off Saturday's 3-2 overtime win versus Winnipeg in the opener of a three-game homestand. Adam Henrique scored for the second time 1:28 into the extra stanza and Martin Brodeur made 21 saves for the Devils, who played without forward Ilya Kovalchuk because of a leg issue.
"The last two games it's been fun," Devils forward Zach Parise said. "We haven't been rattled, and that's definitely a good sign for us."
Patrik Elias also scored in a winning cause and has a team-leading six goals and 11 points. Elias is riding a four-game point streak and his 341 career goals are six shy of matching John MacLean's franchise record.
New Jersey will close out its homestand Friday versus Washington. It's not likely Kovalchuk will play this evening.
"It is getting better," Kovalchuk said of his leg. "We're definitely in the right direction. I was doing a little bike, a little sprints, a little workout. I felt pretty good."
Carolina has lost two straight and six of eight games, including Sunday's 5-2 loss versus the Dallas Stars in the finale of a three-game homestand.
Chad LaRose and Tuomo Ruutu both scored and goaltender Cam Ward was pulled in the second period after allowing four goals on 14 shots. Ward was replaced by Brian Boucher, who finished with 12 saves.
"We can't let our goalies bail us out every single game," said Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. "We've gotta come to play for them every once in a while."
The 'Canes will also visit the Rangers on a two-game road trip.
New Jersey defeated Carolina, 4-2, on Oct. 10 this season thanks to Kovalchuk's goal early in the third period. Kovalchuk had a season-high three points and Johan Hedberg got the win in net, making 24 saves to give the Devils their first win of the season.
Hedberg is 4-0-0 in the last two seasons against Carolina.
The Devils have won four in a row and eight of the previous 10 matchups with Carolina, which is winless in six straight games at New Jersey.
