Phoenix shuts out San Jose
Nov 13, 2011 - 7:35 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Mike Smith posted his first shutout of the season with 31 saves to carry the Coyotes over the Sharks, 3-0.Radim Vrbata, Boyd Gordon and Patrick O'Sullivan all scored for Phoenix, which started its five-game road trip on a positive note and improved to 4-1-1 as the visitor this season.
Thomas Greiss, making his fifth start of the year, gave up all three goals on 23 shots for San Jose, which had won three of four coming in.
"I thought we were lethargic between the ears," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said. "When you aren't there mentally, the physical part doesn't follow."
Ray Whitney's shot off the end boards bounced back out front and onto Vrbata's stick for the game's first goal with 5:39 remaining in the first period.
The Coyotes tacked on in the final minute of the opening stanza, as a turnover in the neutral zone resulted in a 3-on-2 rush that ended with Gordon's backhander trickling in.
O'Sullivan scored off a nice feed from Kyle Chipchura at the 12:55 mark of the third period, while Smith stopped seven shots in the first 20 minutes, 11 in the second stanza and another 13 in the final period to seal the win.
"Our [defense] was fantastic," Smith said humbly. "We deserved to win tonight."
