Rolling Kings host Red Wings

Nov 19, 2011 - 4:21 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Kings will try to match their longest winning streak of the season when they host the Detroit Red Wings in this afternoon's battle from the Staples Center.

The Kings recorded just two wins during a nine-game stretch (2-5-2) from Oct. 25-Nov. 10, but LA has rattled off three straight wins to get back on track. Another victory tonight would give the Kings their longest winning streak since beating Philadelphia, St. Louis, Phoenix and Dallas from Oct. 15-22.

Los Angeles posted its last two wins in a home-and-home sweep of the rival Anaheim Ducks. The Kings recorded a 2-1 shootout win Wednesday in LA before beating the Ducks, 5-3, in Anaheim the following night.

Anze Kopitar scored the game winner with 3:01 to play on Thursday. Kopitar made a move to get clear in the slot and sent a backhander towards the net that went wide to the right. Kopitar then grabbed the puck behind the goal and from the left side used a wraparound, with his second whack at the puck resulting in his ninth goal of the season.

"We're moving the puck more than we have," said Kopitar. "It's been a real good team effort these past two games and we're seeing the results now."

Mike Richards scored twice for the Kings, who have also won four of their last five. Jonathan Quick made 35 saves in the win.

LA has won three of its last four on home ice and is 6-4-1 in the City of Angels this year.

The Red Wings, meanwhile, will try to get back in the win column today after losing two straight on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Detroit has lost eight of 12 overall since beginning the campaign with five consecutive victories.

Detroit has lost the first two tests on four-game road trip and is 2-5-0 away from this season after Thursday's 5-2 setback in San Jose. Marc-Edouard Vlasic finished with a goal and three assists to lead the Sharks to the easy win over the Wings.

Niklas Kronwall and Danny Cleary scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 21 shots to take the loss and Ty Conklin stopped 6-of-7 shots in relief.

"We need to stick together and stay positive," Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg said about the team's recent struggles.

The Red Wings will complete their swing Sunday in Anaheim.

Los Angeles has won five of the last six meetings with the Red Wings overall, but Detroit has taken five out of its previous seven tilts at the Staples Center.
