Red Wings complete road trip in Anaheim

Nov 20, 2011 - 3:55 PM (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings will try to close a road trip with consecutive wins when they visit the sliding Anaheim Ducks tonight at the Honda Center.

Detroit was riding a four-game winning streak when it began this trek, but Mike Babcock's club suffered losses in St. Louis and San Jose before Saturday's victory in Los Angeles. The 4-1 decision over the Kings improved Detroit's road record to just 3-5-0 on the year.

Pavel Datsyuk broke out of a scoring slump on Saturday, scoring a pair of goals to help lift the Red Wings past the Kings. Datsyuk, who has just four markers on the year, had gone 12 games without a goal and he scored Saturday for the first time since Oct. 21 against Columbus.

Niklas Kronwall and Justin Abdelkader also scored for the Red Wings, who halted a five-game road losing streak. Jimmy Howard made 23 saves in the win.

"This is the best game we've played in a while," said Howard. "We stuck with our game plan."

After tonight's tilt, the Red Wings will play three of four games on home ice to end the month of November. Detroit will host Calgary in its next game on Wednesday.

The Ducks, meanwhile, have a dreadful 2-8-4 record since four-game winning streak from Oct. 8-17. Anaheim enters tonight on a three-game skid and has been defeated in nine of its last 10 trips to the ice.

The two most recent setbacks for Anaheim came in a home-and-home series with the rival Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks were able to gain a point in Wednesday's 2-1 shootout loss in LA, but were handed a 5-3 setback the following night in Orange County.

Anaheim trailed the Kings 3-1 early in the third period on Thursday, but Corey Perry and Andrew Cogliano scored the next two goals to even the game at 3-3. Anze Kopitar then tallied the game winner with 3:01 to play and Mike Richards added an empty-net goal to seal Anaheim's fate.

"It's always tough playing from behind," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "We gave up a power play and two shorthanded goals. They were better on their special teams than we were."

Cogliano had two goals to double his season total for the Ducks, while Dan Ellis allowed four goals on 35 shots in a losing effort.

Anaheim will play its next game in Phoenix on Wednesday, but will then return to Honda Center for a six-game homestand. The Ducks are 4-5-0 as the host club this season.

Detroit slammed the Ducks, 5-0, in the Motor City on Nov. 5, giving the Red Wings four wins in the last five meetings with Anaheim. The Wings have also claimed nine out of 12 in this series overall, but Detroit has lost three of four and seven of its last 10 games in the O.C.
