Stuart leads Red Wings past Ducks
Nov 21, 2011 - 5:46 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Brad Stuart scored two goals to help the Detroit Red Wings beat the Anaheim Ducks, 4-2, at Honda Center.Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen both registered a goal and an assist for Detroit, which salvaged a split of its four-game road trip. The Red Wings have won six of eight overall.
Jimmy Howard, who had recorded a shutout in three of his previous five starts against Anaheim, stopped 32-of-34 shots.
"It was a good road trip. We finished strong," Howard said.
Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu lit the lamp in the second period for the Ducks, who got a 26-save performance from Jonas Hiller.
Anaheim is just 2-9-4 since winning four straight games from October 8-17.
Just 1:26 into the contest, Zetterberg gave Detroit an early lead when he stole the puck from Brandon McMillan and quickly backhanded it past Hiller.
A little more than six minutes into the first period, play was halted because of a weather-related power outage. The game resumed after about a 26-minute delay.
As they did in the first, the Red Wings struck early in the second period. Pavel Datsyuk created a turnover in the neutral zone and quickly fed Franzen, who beat Hiller on a breakaway 14 seconds into the frame.
Seven minutes later, Stuart fired a wrister through Hiller to make it 3-0.
The Ducks got on the board when Koivu one-timed a feed from Cam Fowler. Selanne added a power-play goal with 3:39 remaining in the middle stanza, and Anaheim had a chance to pull even when the Red Wings were whistled for consecutive penalties late in regulation.
Shortly after killing Justin Abdelkader's boarding infraction, Jonathan Ericsson went to the box for hooking. Hiller was pulled to create a 6-on-4 advantage, but Stuart sealed the win by hitting the empty net for a short- handed tally with 48 seconds left.
"We made enough mistakes that cost us the hockey game," said Anaheim head coach Randy Carlyle. "There is no other way to describe it. We pretty much gave them the three goals. We again mounted a comeback in the hockey game, but it just seems that we're one goal short again."
