Red Wings return home to face Flames
Nov 23, 2011 - 3:50 PM (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings are back in the Motor City and will try to extend their home winning streak to five games tonight versus the Calgary Flames at Joe Louis Arena.Detroit is 7-2-1 at home this season and just went 2-2 on a four-game road trip, culminating with Sunday's 4-2 win at Anaheim. Brad Stuart scored two goals and Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen both finished with a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who have won six of eight contests overall and are averaging 4.33 goals per game in those victories.
Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard, who had recorded a shutout in three of his previous five starts against Anaheim, stopped 32-of-34 shots.
"It was a good road trip. We finished strong," Howard said.
The team is expected to get defenseman Ian White back tonight after he suffered a fractured cheekbone against Dallas on Nov. 12. White did not travel with the team on the recent road swing and has notched three goals, four assists and leads all Wings' defensemen with a plus-8 rating.
"I probably could have played a little bit sooner, I just couldn't fly on an airplane with all of the sinus and the pressure," White said on the team's website. "But I feel great and it doesn't really hurt at all. I think everything is good to go."
Detroit is four points behind Chicago for the Central Division lead.
Calgary will continue a four-game road trip Wednesday and opened the trek with a 4-1 setback at Columbus on Monday.
Mark Giordano scored the only goal for the Flames, who got 26 saves from Henrik Karlsson and fell to 4-5-0 as the visitor this season. The Flames, last in the Northwest Division, have lost four of six and are 6-6-0 in their last 12 games. They will also visit St. Louis and Minnesota on the current trek.
"This is frustrating for all of us," forward Alex Tanguay told the club's site. "It's one step forward, one step back. One good game, one bad game. It falls on us, as players. We all have to be better."
Tanguay registered his 700th career point with an assist and leads the Flames with 11 assists and 14 points. Curtis Glencross is tops with seven goals.
Miikka Kiprusoff is expected to be in goal for Calgary tonight after getting the night off Monday. He stopped 28 shots in a 4-1 win over the Red Wings on Nov. 3 this season at Joe Louis Arena to help the Flames snap a five-game slide in this series. Kiprusoff needs three games for 500 with the Flames.
The Flames have dropped seven of 11 trips to Detroit. Calgary star Jarome Iginla led his club in scoring against Detroit last season with three goals and three assists for six points in four games. He notched two goals and an assist in the aforementioned win earlier this month.
Red Wings veteran Pavel Datsyuk has three goals and six assists in his last eight contests against Calgary.
