Red Wings top Flames, win 5th straight at home
Nov 24, 2011 - 4:26 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk and Ian White both registered a goal and two assists in Detroit's 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.Tomas Holmstrom netted a pair of power-play goals for the Red Wings, who returned home after splitting a four-game road trip to earn their fifth straight win at Joe Louis Arena.
"I didn't think as a group, that we were as good as we have been, but we found a way to win the game," said Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
The Red Wings' last loss at home came when the Flames posted a 4-1 victory on November 3.
Jimmy Howard made 19 saves in the win.
Jarome Iginla, Brendan Morrison and Olli Jokinen found the back of the net for Calgary, which has dropped six of nine. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25 shots in defeat.
The teams traded power-play goals in the first 5:06 of the third. First, Holmstrom broke a 2-2 tie by taking a feed outside the crease from Datsyuk and whipping a backhander past Kiprusoff's left pad at 2:42. Jokinen then one- timed a T.J. Brodie pass.
Detroit moved ahead for good with a 5-on-3 marker, as Datsyuk's cross-crease pass to Henrik Zetterberg went in off Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester at the 12:39 mark.
Just 1:14 later, Valtteri Filppula stretched the Red Wings' lead with a backhander through a Todd Bertuzzi screen and past Kiprusoff. The goal was scored three seconds after Curtis Glencross, whose slashing infraction put Calgary down a pair of skaters, exited the penalty box.
"You cannot take bad penalties and it killed us tonight," said Calgary head coach Brent Sutter.
Holmstrom put Detroit on the board in the first period, staking a claim in front of Kiprusoff and redirecting Nicklas Lidstrom's point shot.
Iginla, who had two goals and one assist in the previous meeting between the teams, tied it up 44 seconds into the second period with a wrister from the right circle.
Just over two minutes later, Calgary grabbed the lead when Morrison, playing in his first game since coming off injured reserve, fired a slap shot past Howard.
White then celebrated his return to the lineup by snapping a wrister between the legs of Kiprusoff to draw the Red Wings even at the 7:38 mark of the middle stanza. White missed the previous four games with a fractured cheekbone.
