Final - OT
Capitals ground Jets in OT
Nov 24, 2011 - 6:10 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Jason Chimera scored the game-winning goal 1:52 into overtime, as Washington notched a 4-3 victory over Winnipeg.Dennis Wideman set up the game-winner in overtime, grabbing a loose puck and snapping a pass to a wide-open Chimera in front of the net. The veteran buried the puck for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Chimera added a goal in regulation, while Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom also scored for the Capitals, who have won two straight following a four-game slide.
Tomas Vokoun stopped 22 shots for the win.
Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood both had a goal and an assist, while Bryan Little added a goal for the Jets, who were denied their first four-game win streak of the season.
Ondrej Pavelec, making his career-best 13th consecutive start, stopped 33 shots in the loss.
"I thought we played a pretty decent game," said Jets coach Claude Noel. "I think the character of our team has shown that they want to win the game and they battle to win the game."
Semin, who was a healthy scratch for the first time since his rookie season in Monday's 4-3 win over Phoenix, gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead early in the first.
The goal was set up by Alex Ovechkin, who gathered a loose puck and backhanded a pass to Semin for the slap-shot tally at 5:23.
The Jets, who have scored 43 goals in their last 13 games, answered later in the period, as Nik Antropov found Ladd on a 2-on-1 for a 1-1 tie.
Washington reclaimed the lead just 12 seconds later, as a Jets defensive breakdown allowed Brooks Laich to hit an open Chimera in front of the net for a one-timer.
Wellwood found space and slammed home a rebound for the equalizer at 16:30.
Backstrom notched the lone goal of the second period at the 3:08 mark, beating Pavelec on the right doorstep.
The goal was assisted by defenseman Dmitry Orlov, who made his NHL debut on Monday. It was Orlov's first career point.
The Jets, though, tied the game again at the 12:36 mark of the third, as Little buried a wrister from the left face-off circle.
