Flames hit the road to battle Sharks

Jan 17, 2012 - 4:11 PM (Sports Network) - After having a sizeable home winning streak halted over the weekend, the Calgary Flames will try to win for the first time in six road contests this evening as they take on the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks.

The Flames won the first three of a four-game homestand to push their winning streak in Calgary to eight in a row, but that run came to end on Saturday with a 4-1 loss to the Kings.

Beginning his second stint with the Flames after being acquired in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday, Mike Cammalleri netted Calgary's goal, while Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 23 shots.

"It was fun to be back for sure, but it would have been nice to get the win," said Cammalleri. "It doesn't feel as good with the loss. Really wanted to get that win, but it was very nice to be back."

Calgary outshot Los Angeles 11-6 in the first period and 30-24 in the game, but the Kings netted the contest's first three goals in the second period.

"I thought that our first period was as good a first period as we probably played all year," Flames head coach Brent Sutter said. "They don't give you a whole lot, but when they have mistakes happen, [Kings goaltender Jonathan] Quick is obviously an outstanding goalie."

The Flames are hitting the road for the first time since dropping the final five tests of a seven-game swing from Dec. 23-Jan. 5, a road trip that ended with a 9-0 loss in Boston. Calgary's next three games are on the road.

The Sharks play host to the Flames after an impressive streak of their own came to an end on Sunday. San Jose had gone 6-0-2 in eight games prior to a 4-3 loss at Chicago.

Joe Pavelski and Jamie McGinn scored goals in the second period to even the game before the Blackhawks came back with the next two goals. San Jose's Tommy Wingels capped the scoring with his first career NHL goal, while Antti Niemi made 36 saves.

"We had full momentum. We had to take the opportunity to pounce on them right away and I don't think we did that. Then they got the next goal and that was key," McGinn said about the second period.

San Jose, which holds a two-point lead over Los Angeles for first place in the division, is 7-1-1 in its nine at home.

The Sharks and Flames are meeting for the first time in the 2011-12 season. San Jose has won three straight and five of the past seven meetings, while Calgary has dropped three in a row on the road in this series.
