Sharks beat Flames in shootout

Jan 18, 2012 - 6:47 AM San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Michal Handzus netted the eventual game-winner in the shootout, lifting the San Jose Sharks over the Calgary Flames, 2-1, on Tuesday.

Torrey Mitchell scored a goal for the Sharks, who won for the seventh time in nine games.

Antti Niemi made 27 saves in the win.

Chris Butler lit the lamp for Calgary and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 30-of-31 shots as the Flames dropped their sixth straight road game.

After Handzus lifted a wrister under the crossbar from the slot in the second round of the shootout, Calgary's Mike Cammalleri sailed a backhander over the net.

Brent Burns then sealed the San Jose victory by sweeping across the front of the goal and finishing with a backhand past the stick side of Kiprusoff.

The game, though, should not have reached that far.

With a minute left in overtime, San Jose's Justin Braun sent a hard wrister from the top of the right circle that flew into the top-left corner of the net for what appeared to be the game-deciding goal.

However, the referees huddled together and called the goal off as it looked like Sharks center Tommy Wingels bumped into Kiprusoff and knocked him to the ground, allowing the goal to sail over the goaltender's outstretched glove.

But on the video reviews it was seen that Calgary's Olli Jokinen was the one who crashed into Kiprusoff and knocked him down.

Butler broke a scoreless tie at the 12:07 mark of the second period with a one-timer from the left point that screamed into the top-right corner of the net.

After Jarome Iginla failed to get his stick on what would have been an easy goal late in the second period to extend the Flames' lead, Mitchell knotted the game at one just past the midpoint of the third period when he cleaned up a rebound with a backhander into an open net.

Game Notes

Burns and Handzus each assisted on Mitchell's goal...San Jose was 0-for-2 on the power play...Calgary did not receive a power play in the game...Kiprusoff made four saves while Niemi stopped six shots in a scoreless first period.
