Canadiens down Red Wings for 6th straight win
Nov 17, 2014 - 5:56 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - P.K. Subban and Brendan Gallagher each registered a goal and an assist to power the Montreal Canadiens to a sixth straight win with a 4-1 decision over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.Brandon Prust and Tomas Plekanec also scored for the Canadiens, who were coming off a 6-3 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday.
"We were playing our fourth game in six nights, back-to-back and against a good Red Wings team, but the guys didn't take any excuses," Montreal coach Michel Therrien said.
Dustin Tokarski turned aside 28 shots in the win.
Riley Sheahan notched a power-play goal for Detroit and Jimmy Howard allowed all four goals on 19 shots in defeat.
"It's not what we wanted," Sheahan said. "We were inconsistent. Some shifts we showed glimpses of great work and then we weren't really thinking much."
After a scoreless first, Prust rushed up the right side and fired a shot off the glove of Howard short side for his first goal of the season 3:20 into the second.
Just over five minutes later, Subban's blast from the point off a faceoff hit defenseman Kyle Quincey's leg and bounced off the ice and over Howard's shoulder for a power-play goal and a 2-0 game.
Less than two minutes into the third, Plekanec tapped in a rebound of Gallagher's shot for a 3-0 advantage.
Tokarski turned aside Danny DeKeyser's blast from the point, but Sheahan skated across the crease to backhand the rebound into an open net 4:06 into the final stanza.
Gallagher was knocked down behind the net, but he got up on one knee and banked a shot off the arm of Howard from well below the goal line and into the net to restore Montreal's three-goal lead just over four minutes later.
