Bruins end skid, beat Pens in OT
Jan 8, 2015 - 5:35 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Patrice Bergeron scored two goals, including the game-winner with 2:17 remaining in overtime, as the visiting Boston Bruins edged the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Wednesday night.Bergeron got behind Pittsburgh defenseman Simon Despres and redirected Milan Lucic's shot from the point. After a lengthy review to determine if the puck was hit by a high stick, Bergeron was ruled to have deflected the puck in legally.
"I was pretty confident that it was below the crossbar," Bergeron said of his goal.
Tuukka Rask made 37 saves for the Bruins, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Each defeat during the skid came after regulation.
"We are just trying to get our game where it should be," said Rask. "It was a great way to grind it out."
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and one assist and Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves for Pittsburgh, which has dropped six of eight.
"I think we played hard," Malkin said. "Just not enough to win."
Malkin set up Beau Bennett for the game's first goal. It looked as though Malkin was going to circle the net with the puck. Rask moved to his right, following Malkin, who managed to slip the puck out the other side. Bennett collected the pass and quickly fired a shot past a surprised Rask 3:37 into the game.
The Bruins tied it on Zdeno Chara's blast from the left point with 2:03 remaining in the opening period.
Pittsburgh thought it had regained the lead at 3:28 of the second period, but Craig Adams' tally was waved off because contact had been made with Rask.
Boston moved ahead when Bergeron jumped on a loose puck in the slot and beat Fleury with 4:23 left in the second.
Malkin tied it up at 2-2 when he ripped a slap shot over Rask's left shoulder 14 seconds into the third period.
