Leafs beat Oilers to snap 11-game skid

The Toronto Maple Leafs snapped their franchise-worst losing streak with an outburst of offense to beat the lowly Edmonton Oilers.

Five different players scored to lead the Maple Leafs to a 5-1 win Saturday night, ending their 11-game skid.

The goals from Richard Panik, Phil Kessel, Morgan Rielly, Mike Santorelli and Peter Holland gave Toronto its first win in almost a month.

The 0-10-1 stretch was the franchise's second-longest winless streak after a 15-game slump during the 1987-88 season that included 11 losses and four ties.

"Some of those games we felt like we should have won and we did it to ourselves," said interim Maple Leafs coach Peter Horachek. "So it was a really great feeling to see all four lines contribute.

James Reimer was within seconds of his first shutout of the season and second in a row against Edmonton before Luke Gazdic buried a rebound past him. Reimer made 32 saves in the win.

Viktor Fasth gave up all five goals on 28 shots as Edmonton started a six-game road trip with its fourth loss in six outings.

"I thought we'd have a better start than we did," said interim Oilers coach Todd Nelson.

The Maple Leafs didn't score more than three goals during their 11-game losing streak.

They got three in a 4 1/2-minute span in the second period against Edmonton, including two through Fasth's legs during one 98-second stretch.

"We got a little loose at times when we had a lead," Horachek said. "I think the guys wanted a bigger lead."

Panik opened the scoring on a power play at 8:56 and Kessel got his 21st goal of the season on a shot through traffic.

Rielly then made it 3-0 with a nice individual effort, stickhandling around at least three Oilers to beat Fasth with 6:34 left in the period.

Santorelli scored 39 seconds into the third period on a sharp wrister from the right circle that sailed over Fasth's shoulder into top corner on the far side to make it 4-0.

It was the first time the Maple Leafs scored four goals since beating Columbus 5-2 on Jan. 9 in their last win before the losing streak.

Holland scored with a backhand on a breakaway midway through the third period.

Game Notes

Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf missed a sixth consecutive game with a hand injury ... The teams will meet again in Alberta's capital on March 16 ... Toronto hosts the New York Rangers on Tuesday ... The Oilers face New Jersey on Monday.
