Perry, Getzlaf, Schneider help Ducks to first road win
Nov 4, 2007 - 3:43 AM By Bob Huhn PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterGLENDALE, Arizona (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks ended their dubious streak while the Phoenix Coyotes continued theirs.
Corey Perry scored two goals and set up another and defenseman Mathieu Schneider and Ryan Getzlaf each had a tally and two assists to lead the Ducks to a 5-2 win over the Coyotes on Saturday.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 30 shots and blue-liner Chris Pronger collected three assists as the defending Stanley Cup champions recorded their first road win of the season.
The Ducks, who went 22-14-5 on the road in 2006-07, was 0-5-1 in their first six contests away from the Honda Center.
Conversely, the Coyotes lost their six straight game at home. Phoenix's last win in the desert - their only one of the campaign - came on Opening Night, a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues.
The Coyotes have been outscored at home by a 27-15 margin. Anaheim got on the board first, scoring during a 5-on-3 advantage after rookie Martin Hanzal was sent off for holding and defenseman Nick Boynton was called for cross-checking.
Schneider, playing in just his second game after sitting out the first 13 with a broken ankle, fired a slap shot from above the left faceoff circle that sailed past goaltender Alex Auld's left shoulder at 11:13 for a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks put away the game in the second period. Perry backhanded a rebound past Auld for his seventh goal of the season at 4:58, and former Coyote Brad May registered his first goal of the season by deflecting a blast by Schneider from the left point into the net for a 3-0 bulge.
Phoenix spoiled Giguere's shutout bid early in the third as Radim Vrbata redirected defenseman Ed Jovanovski's wrist shot from the left circle between the netminder's legs at 2:29.
Getzlaf and Jovanovski traded power-play tallies later in the session before Perry sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minute.
Vrbata and Jovanovski each added an assist for the Coyotes, who had won three of their previous four games.
