Kobasew's highlight-reel goal helps Bruins to rare win
Nov 11, 2007 - 2:56 AM By Mike Petraglia PA SportsTicker Contributing WriterBOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins finally met a team that has as much trouble scoring as they do.
Chuck Kobasew scored the go-ahead goal and Tim Thomas stopped 45 shots as the Bruins edged the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, on Saturday night at TD Banknorth Garden.
Marco Sturm added his team-leading seventh tally for Boston, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Buffalo, which has lost five of six, knotted the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal when Daniel Paille took a pass from Paul Gaustad and beat Thomas on the short side at 8:13 of the third period.
The Bruins answered just 32 seconds later as Kobasew made a spectacular play by batting the rebound of Phil Kessel's slap shot between his legs and past goaltender Ryan Miller at 8:45 for a 2-1 lead.
The Sabres outshot the Bruins, 46-22, but remained winless this month. Buffalo has been outscored, 16-8, in November.
The Bruins' lack of scoring punch continued to plague them early in this one. Boston, which has scored two or fewer goals in 10 of its 15 games, was outshot, 32-13, over two periods.
However, Boston finally broke through late in the second with each team serving a penalty.
Sturm took control of the puck in the neutral zone and dished to Marc Savard on the left wing. Savard fed a streaking Sturm, who took the pass and put a backhander past Miller with 1:44 remaining for a 1-0 lead.
It was the sixth goal of the season and seventh point in as many games for Sturm.
Miller stopped 20 shots for Buffalo, which was 0-for-6 on the power play.
The Bruins, who entered the game already down three defensemen, almost lost another when Dennis Wideman was checked into boards in the left corner seven minutes into the opening period. But after getting treatment in the locker room, he returned several minutes later.
