Who is AOC president hopeful Danni Roche?
Mar 20, 2017 - 7:03 AM AOC PRESIDENT HOPEFUL DANNI ROCHE - WHO IS SHE?:* WHO IS DANNI ROCHE?
A 1996 Atlanta Olympics Hockeyroos gold medallist. Since retiring, the 46-year-old has served as a director of the Hockey Australia board (2004-12) and vice-president of the Oceania Hockey Federation. She's on the boards of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and AFL club St Kilda, and has forged a successful career as a stockbroker.
* WHAT IS SHE PROMISING?
To work for nothing, in stark contrast to Coates' reported $700,000 salary. Her bid is centred on redirecting money from executives' pockets towards the sports and athletes, introducing term limits for AOC members and its president and increasing collaboration between various bodies. The grand aim? A return to Olympic glory in Tokyo 2020.
* IS IT CONTROVERSIAL?
Most definitely. Coates has been elected unopposed since taking up the post in 1990. On top of that, the AOC has accused Roche of acting on the invitation of John Wylie, chairman of the ASC and Coates' bitter nemesis. She strongly denies this.
* HOW CAN SHE WIN?
Gain a majority of 94 votes on May 6 at the AOC's annual general meeting. Until then, both parties will be in full lobbying mode with the organisation's executive members, summer and winter national federations and the Athletes' Commission.
* WHAT DOES SHE HAVE THAT COATES DOESN'T?
A fresh approach, financial discipline and a more-holistic focus on Olympic athletes and teams. Coates, on the other hand, has expansive experience, political savvy and international influence off the back of an illustrious administrative career.
