Souths relieved as Burgess cleared to play
Apr 19, 2017 - 1:02 AM South Sydney coach Michael Maguire says he is relieved captain Sam Burgess escaped a two-week ban.Maguire said he was pleased Burgess was given a fair judiciary hearing before beating a dangerous tackle charge to ensure the forward's leadership and strength would be key in Friday night's match against Brisbane.
"You want your best players playing all the time. They are important to every team and it is a great bonus for us to have Sammy," Maguire said.
Burgess told Tuesday night's NRL judiciary hearing that he had only braced as Greg Eastwood passed before reaching the line, and that any contact had been generated by the Bulldogs' ball-carrier in his side's 24-9 loss.
"I thought they were very thorough in what they spoke about last night but it was good to see from all the evidence we showed that really it was more of a chest tackle than what was put forward," Maguire said on Wednesday.
The coach said the return of Burgess' leadership and strength as a forward would be a confidence booster against the Broncos at ANZ Stadium.
