Rebels snare young Lomax from Brumbies
Jul 19, 2016 - 2:44 AM Melbourne Rebels have snared Australian under-20s tighthead prop Tyrel Lomax from Super Rugby conference rivals the Brumbies.Lomax, the son of former New Zealand rugby league international and Canberra Raiders star John Lomax, has signed a two-year deal with the Rebels, beginning in 2017.
The hulking front-rower, who weighs in at 127kg and stands at 193cm, is a boom signing for the Rebels given he started every game at the recent under-20s World Cup for Australia.
"Tyrel demonstrated during the world championship that he's a strong scrummager and has well developed core skills for his size," Rebels coach Tony McGahan said.
"We're looking forward to fast tracking his development and providing opportunities for him to transition into Super Rugby next season."
Lomax said he had decided to join the Rebels while playing at the tournament in England.
"They said it was a great program and how much it has done for their development," Lomax said.
"I'm looking forward to relocating to Melbourne and consider this as a long-term commitment to the Rebels."
