Donovan brace leads L.A. to big win over expansion Timbers

Apr 24, 2011 - 5:02 AM Carson, CA (Sports Network) - Landon Donovan scored two goals and an assist to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 3-0 win over the expansion Portland Timbers at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night.

Donovan, who hadn't registered a point yet this season, broke that streak in the fourth minute when his pass sprung Chad Barrett in the offensive third. Barrett took a touch, the ball jumped on him and he volleyed past Timbers goalkeeper Matt Pickens from about 20-yards for the 1-0 advantage. It was the second goal in as many games for Barrett.

Just four minutes later Donovan broke his personal 731 goalless streak when he was dragged down in the Portland penalty area by Rodney Wallace, drawing a penalty kick call. Donovan cooly slotted home to make the score 2-0.

That was how the score stayed until the 67th minute when Donovan added his second goal of the game and season on a set up from second-half substitute Juan Pablo Angel. Angel controlled the ball in the Timbers' area and found Donovan at the back post with a pin-point service from the end line. Donovan made no mistake on the chance, heading into an open net for his 1-5th career MLS goal.

The Galaxy (4-1-3) will be gunning for their third straight win when they travel to Dallas on May 1, while Portland (2-3-2) hopes to rebound vs. Real Salt Lake a day earlier in its next MLS fixture.
