TFC extends unbeaten streak with win over Rapids
Sep 17, 2011 - 7:52 PM Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto FC extended its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids at BMO Field on Saturday.A second-half brace from Danny Koevermans lifted Toronto past Colorado for its second consecutive win. Sanna Nyassi pulled a goal back for the Rapids, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation goal.
Koevermans opened the scoring for Toronto in the 52nd minute, getting on the end of a cross from Ashtone Morgan.
Morgan played a beautiful ball across the face of goal and Koevermans eclipsed his defender to redirect the pass into the net with a right-footed effort.
Koevermans doubled Toronto's advantage in similar fashion, connecting on a cross played in front of goal.
Nick Soolsma sent a set piece into the box, and Koevermans met the assist with a header that found its way past Colorado goalkeeper Matt Pickens.
Nyassi pulled a goal back for Colorado in the 69th minute following a scramble in the box. An off-target shot found Nyassi at the back post and the Rapids striker took advantage, retaining possession and roofing a shot past Milos Kocic for the consolation goal.
Colorado continues to struggle, as the Rapids have lost three straight MLS matches and are winless in their last four. They are still in good shape to qualify for the playoffs, occupying fifth place in the Western Conference with 41 points from 30 games. Toronto has 30 points in as many games.
Both teams return to MLS action on Sept. 24. The Rapids (10-9-11) will head home to host the San Jose Earthquakes, while Toronto (6-12-12) will hit the road to face Chivas USA at The Home Depot Center.
