Colorado spoils Portland's MLS debut

Mar 20, 2011 - 3:28 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - Omar Cummings became the first player to score in four consecutive season openers, leading the Colorado Rapids to a 3-1 win over the expansion Portland Timbers on Saturday in Major League Soccer.

Jeff Larentowicz and Jamie Smith also had goals for Colorado (1-0-0) at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, as the defending MLS Cup champion Rapids opened defense of their title by extending their unbeaten streak in home openers to eight.

Kenny Cooper scored for Portland (0-1-0), which lost its MLS debut.

Larentowicz gave Colorado the early lead when he scored in the eighth minute, and Cummings and Smith followed with their goals one-minute apart just before the half-hour mark.

Colorado settled in with the comfortable lead, and Cooper notched the Timbers' lone goal with 10 minutes remaining.

Portland will try to notch its first MLS win March 26 at Toronto FC, which was beaten by expansion club Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 4-2, on Saturday. The Rapids visit Chivas USA on March 26.
