Revs, United hope to build on solid starts

Mar 25, 2011 - 9:01 PM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - New England manager Steve Nicol believes the Revolution "got what we deserved" last weekend in a season-opening 1-1 draw at the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Shalrie Joseph scored early in the match and New England held on for a crucial point on the road, which is "good for our confidence," the goal scorer said.

New England hosts D.C. United, which defeated the Columbus Crew 3-1 last week, in its home opener Saturday at Gillette Stadium and hopes to build on the huge opening week.

"It feels good starting the first game of the season getting a point on the road against a huge team like LA," Joseph added.

"It is always good to get a point on the road. If you look at it at the end of the year if you get a point out of every road game that is great," Revs goalie Matt Reis said.

Nicol added: "They all did a great job and it was a great point. Half the time you don't get them."

Considering New England had just four results on the road last year, two draws and two wins in 15 matches, Nicol knows how important it was to open with even a point on the road.

The fact the Revolution earned the point against L.A., which finished with the best record in MLS last season, makes it even more impressive and should give the club a lot of confidence.

But, United has a lot of confidence as well after defeating the Crew last week in their season opener. Charlie Davies returned from a 17-month absence from a near-fatal car accident to score two goals in his MLS debut for D.C.

The U.S. striker, on loan from French side Sochaux, didn't start the match but converted a penalty and added another goal in less than a half of action. With D.C. trying to forget about last season, the worst in its history, Davies did his part and hopes to give United a second win this week.

"I'm really excited," Davies said on the MLS website. "Our goal is to win, and it'd be pretty good after two games [to have] six points."
