Crew host FCD with both teams searching for 1st win of season

Mar 31, 2011 - 7:43 PM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - FC Dallas travels to take on the Columbus Crew in a Major League Soccer fixture on Friday between two winless teams early in the 2011 season.

Dallas (0-1-1) is coming off a 2-0 loss at home to the San Jose Earthquakes, and will be aiming to steady things in the backline after Chris Wondolowski torched them for both goals this past weekend.

"On both goals, both of those defenders were too far away," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said of his center backs after the game. "Their responsibility is to stop shots, stop penetration, stop runners from running through them, and I thought that those two situations, they left them too free. We have seen [George John and Zach Loyd] play better than that."

But it wasn't just the defense, as Dallas failed to generate many scoring chances in the loss as well.

"The game is made with two parts," Hyndman said. "Stopping goals and scoring goals, and I don't think we did either very well [vs. San Jose]."

Columbus (0-1-1) rebounded from a 3-1 loss to D.C. United to open the season by battling to a scoreless draw with Red Bull New York in its last MLS fixture. While it was a step up from the opening weekend, Crew coach Robert Warzycha expects more, especially considering the game was in Columbus vs. a team missing a number of significant contributors because of injury and international call-up.

"Offensively we have to be sharper in front of the goal," he said. "If we shot earlier a couple of times maybe we would have scored. Playing against a team like that we should have taken three points.

"If you don't shoot, you don't score. It's as simple as that. We had opportunities in the second half, probably two or three times where somebody could have pulled the trigger."

The Crew will have to find a way to get it done on Friday without defenders Danny O'Rourke and Shaun Francis, who are nursing injuries.

Dallas will be without defenders Kyle Davies and Edson Edward for the same reason.
