Seattle, San Jose clash in Western tilt
Apr 1, 2011 - 8:44 PM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC travel to take on the San Jose Earthquakes in a Major League Soccer clash at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday night. The Sounders are hoping for their first win of the season after starting the season 0-2-1. Their last fixture, a 1-1 tie vs. Houston last week, was a step in the right direction after dominating the game for long stretches, but they were unable to capitalize on a number of chances.
"I think we deserved more than a tie," Sounders FC coach Sigi Schmid told his club's website after the game. "I'm very proud of the team. I'm very proud of the effort they put in. Right now we can't get anything to break our way sometimes. So I'm happy that we fought back and got the equalizer. Like I said, we deserved more on the day."
Steve Zakuani scored Seattle?s first goal of the year in the 80th minute to ensure his team would earn its first point of the season.
"It wasn't the prettiest goal, but they all count the same," Zakuani told soundersfc.com. "We have that monkey off our back, now we have to keep playing how we're playing."
San Jose (1-1-0) is coming off an impressive 2-0 win at Dallas last weekend thanks to a Chris Wondolowski double. It was an important result for the 'Quakes after the team lost 1-0 vs. Real Salt Lake to open the season the previous week.
"I had three great chances [in the RSL game] that I should have finished," Wondolowski told mlssoccer.com. "I should have gotten one or two. I put that on me."
"What's good about Chris is he doesn't drop his head," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said of Wondolowski's disappointing first game. "He knows he can finish and he proved it again [vs. Dallas] that he's one of the top strikers if not finishers in our league. As long as someone scores, and it happens to be Chris right now, we're fine."
San Jose will be without midfielder Andre Luiz, while midfielder Omar Jasseh forward Scott Sealy and defender Tim Ward are doubtful and forward Steven Lenhart is questionable, all with injuries.
Seattle will be without attacker Mike Fucito, while striker Fredy Montero is doubtful, and defender James Riley midfielder Pat Noonan and defender Taylor Graham are questionable with injuries of their own.
