Rapids drop D.C. at DSG Park

Apr 4, 2011 - 1:04 AM Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The reigning Major League Soccer champion Colorado Rapids continued their perfect start to the 2011 season with a 4-1 win over D.C. United at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sunday.

With the win, Colorado is 3-0-0, outscoring the opposition 8-2 in its first three games.

The Rapids went up 1-0 in the 38th minute when midfielder Jeff Larentowicz chipped a pass over the top to forward Caleb Folan, who was isolated with United defender Rodrigo Brasesco. Folan deked Brasesco out of position before cutting back and hitting a 12-yard shot into the left-post side-netting, past a helpless Pat Onstad for his first MLS goal.

D.C. United equalized in the 70th minute when Chris Korb crossed to the left side of the Colorado penalty area to Santino Quaranta, who struck a first-time volley past Matt Pickens for his first goal of the season.

But Colorado answered less than a minute later when Jamie Smith flicked an Anthony Wallace cross past Onstad off the restart to make it 2-1. The goal was Smith's second of the season.

The Rapids put the game away with under 10 minutes to play when Sanna Nyassi floated a cross from the right side to Folan, who headed inside the right post for his second goal of the game to make it 3-1.

Omar Cummings added a goal, his second of the season, in stoppage time to close out the scoring.

Colorado will aim to continue its perfect start at FC Dallas on Friday, while United (1-2-0) hopes to end a two-game losing streak when it hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy a day later in its next MLS fixture.
